Countertop Replacement, Templated and Installed

Replacing counters is the highest-impact-per-dollar change in most kitchens, and it is one of the few renovations that is genuinely finished in a day once the material arrives. The lead time is fabrication, not installation.

Material choice matters more in this climate than the showroom will usually tell you. Quartz is excellent indoors and discolours under sustained UV, so it is a poor choice anywhere it gets direct sun or on a covered porch. Granite and porcelain handle both. If the counter runs to a window wall or continues outside, that changes the answer.

Sink, faucet and any outlet relocation under one licensed contractor rather than three phone calls.

Common Questions

How much do new countertops cost in Charleston?

Generally $3,500 to $14,000 installed for a typical kitchen. The variables are square footage, material, edge profile and the number of cutouts. Entry-level quartz and granite are closer than most people expect these days; the premium is usually in specific stone selections and in thicker or mitred edge details.

Quartz or granite in a Charleston kitchen?

Indoors, quartz is harder, non-porous and needs no sealing, which makes it the easier daily surface. Its weakness is ultraviolet light — most quartz is not rated for sustained direct sun and will discolour, so it is a poor choice for a sun-flooded window run, a covered porch or an outdoor kitchen. Granite and porcelain handle UV and heat without complaint. If the run sees real sun, that decides it.

How long does countertop replacement take?

Two to three weeks from template to installation, almost all of which is fabrication lead time. Templating takes an hour or two, and installation is usually a single day. The sink and faucet go back the same day or the next, so the kitchen is out of action for far less time than the calendar suggests.

Can you replace counters without replacing the cabinets?

Yes, and it is one of the most common things we do. What matters is that the existing boxes are level and sound enough to carry stone — granite and quartz are heavy, and cabinets that have shifted or suffered water damage need addressing first. We check the runs and the sink base before templating, because discovering it afterwards means a slab that no longer fits.

Plan the cost around your scope and location

Compare the selected surface, measured area, edge details, sink cutouts, removal and disposal. Ask who handles sink reconnection, backsplash changes and any cabinet support work.

Compare the West Ashley kitchen guide or Rock Hill kitchen guide, then find the guide for your location. These describe broader room remodels; use their scope information rather than treating their totals as a quote for this individual service.

Published ranges are planning references for the scope and location named in each guide. Confirm your address, selections, allowances and exclusions in a written estimate. Fixed-price and cost-plus contracts are both available depending on scope.
