Short answer: Frequently yes if the house is from before the mid-1990s or the panel is already full, and the honest way to know is a load calculation before the design is finished, not after demolition. Code requires a modern kitchen to have at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits plus dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, disposal, microwave and refrigerator, and an induction range or double wall oven is a 40–50 amp circuit on its own. A 100-amp panel with no open spaces cannot absorb that; a 200-amp panel with room usually can.
What a kitchen remodel actually adds
People think of the range. The range is one line item in a list the code writes for you. Under the residential code (the NEC as adopted in South Carolina), a kitchen gets:
- At least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for the counter receptacles, with GFCI protection.
- Dedicated circuits for the dishwasher, the disposal, the microwave (built-in or over-range), and usually the refrigerator.
- A range or cooktop circuit: 40 or 50 amps at 240 volts for electric or induction; a gas range still needs a 120-volt circuit.
- A wall oven circuit if separate, another 30–50 amps.
- Lighting on its own circuit, and often under-cabinet and island lighting added.
- Arc-fault (AFCI) protection on the new circuits, which means new breaker types.
That is six to nine breaker spaces, and 80–120 amps of connected load, into a panel that might have been sized for a 1985 kitchen with one counter circuit.
How to tell before you commit
- Read the main breaker. The number on the biggest breaker (100, 150, 200) is the service size. 100 amps in a house with central AC is already tight.
- Count the empty spaces. No open slots, or a row of tandem ("cheater") breakers doubling up, means there is no room without a subpanel or a replacement.
- Check the brand. Federal Pacific or Zinsco: it gets replaced regardless. See why lights flicker.
- Ask for a load calculation. This is an NEC method (Article 220) that adds up the house's loads with demand factors and produces an amp figure. Any electrician can do it in half an hour. If the number is within about 80% of the service size before the kitchen, the kitchen tips it.
- Look at what else is coming. A car charger, a second HVAC system, a hot tub, a tankless electric water heater. If any are in the next five years, size the panel once.
The honest version of the options
The panel is fine, it just needs circuits. A 200-amp panel with open spaces: the kitchen circuits are added, and this is ordinary electrical work within the remodel. This is the common case for houses from about 2000 on, in both markets.
The panel is full but the service is big enough. A subpanel next to it picks up the kitchen. Cheaper than a replacement and often right.
The service is too small. A service upgrade: new meter base, new service entrance cable, new panel, utility coordination and a permit of its own. This is the one that changes the budget and the schedule, and it is the one to find out about before the cabinets are ordered. In a lot of older Charleston and Rock Hill houses it is also the right moment, because the panel was going to be the next problem anyway.
What we will not do is design a kitchen around a panel that cannot carry it and find out at rough-in. That is how a remodel gains three weeks and a surprise.
What it does to the schedule and the budget
Adding circuits to an adequate panel is inside a normal kitchen schedule. A subpanel adds a day. A full service upgrade adds utility coordination (Dominion Energy in the Charleston area, Duke Energy or York Electric in York County) and its own inspection, which can be a week or more of lead time if it is not started early; started at design, it runs alongside the demo and costs the schedule nothing. What is left after the electrician — and who does it
In a remodel this question answers itself, because the general contractor coordinates the electrician and everyone else. What is worth naming is the order: load calculation at design, panel or service work before or during rough-in, inspection before drywall, then the kitchen closes up. If you are not remodeling and the electrician has just replaced your panel, what is left is the wall around it and sometimes the closet it came out of, which is our drywall and finish work. Charleston and York County notes
Charleston: the 1960s–80s ranch and split-level stock in West Ashley, James Island, Hanahan and parts of Mount Pleasant is where the 100-amp service and the full panel live, and it is where the induction range conversation usually ends in a service upgrade. Downtown, the constraint is often physical: where a 200-amp panel and a new meter base can legally go on a historic single house, and whether the BAR cares about the meter (it usually does not for a like-for-like location). York County: Fort Mill and Tega Cay houses from the 2000s mostly have 200-amp services and the question is spaces, not capacity; the older Rock Hill and Clover stock is the 100-amp case. In both markets a gas range on an existing gas line avoids the biggest circuit, which is worth weighing honestly against the induction preference.
