Seam placement is the main one. Where a seam falls, whether it lands in a visually quiet spot, and how the pattern runs across it are decisions made at template, and they are effectively permanent. A seam in the middle of an island is a different kitchen from a seam tucked at a corner.
Overhangs need support. An unsupported overhang beyond the span the material allows will crack, and the bracket or corbel that prevents it should be designed rather than discovered at installation.
Cabinets have to be level before templating, not after. A template taken off cabinets that are then adjusted produces a worktop that fits nothing.

It depends on the slab size and the run. Long runs and large islands often need one, and the useful question is not whether there is a seam but where it falls and how the pattern carries across it.
