Recurring cracks need assessment of the cause before the joint is repaired. Choose the tape and compound as a compatible system following manufacturer instructions; mesh is not a universal cure for movement. USG's joint-tape guidance explains the differences between paper and fiberglass systems and specifies setting-type compound when fiberglass tape is used.
For water damage, identify the source and assess the board before deciding what can remain. The Gypsum Association's GA-231-2025 guidance makes that decision depend on exposure and board condition, with replacement where there is doubt. A stain alone does not establish the full repair scope.
The finish is what people actually notice. A structurally sound patch with a visible halo around it reads as a bad repair, which is why the feathering and the texture match matter as much as the mud underneath.
